Don Day would like to know what your favorite restaurant is. And then share it with others on dondayinsma.wordpress.com. The original thought was a survey. But why have a survey when you can have a party. So Don Day and Don Day’s Wife are hosting one.
We’re calling it the SMARTs. Because what’s an awards program without an acronym. The letters stand for the San Miguel de Allende Reader’s Taste awards. And at the SMARTs, you’ll be asked by Don Day what your favorite restaurant is and maybe a couple of other food questions. Mostly, though, you’ll just be asked to have a good time.
And what’s going to happen at the SMARTs party?
A fabulous Mexican feast with some of Don Day’s favorite dishes being prepared by one of Don Day’s favorite chefs.
Live music from some of Don Day’s Wife’s…no make that San Miguel’s…favorite musicians (and yes, Don Day’s Wife has insisted on a dance floor).
Fun foodie type prizes (but hopefully not for dancing).
A wine tasting to determine San Miguel’s very best cheap…sorry, inexpensive…wine.
And, of course, those three words that must end every list like this, so much more.
The Date is March 30 (it’s a Sunday).
The Time is 5:00 pm (it’s early so Don Day doesn’t nod off)
The Place is La Frontera (it’s at Stirling Dickinson 28, in Plaza Pueblita)
The Price is 350 pesos (which includes the wine tasting)
The Reservations are being taken now at 152 4265 or lafronterasma@gmail.com.
Don Day and Don Day’s Wife will only have a couple of weeks left before they, like all snowbirds, flock back to the north. We’d love to meet some of the people who read dondayinsma before we leave.
Sorry, but not only will I be out of town on that date, I’ll be out of the continent. But my votes go to (drum roll, please): Cafe Rama and the Longhorn Smokehouse.
Darn! This will be the second year in a row that Liz and I will not be able to attend. We will be on a plane to Ixtapa 2 hours before the party begins. The worst shame is that I am always looking for a fancy occasion so that Liz can wear her pearls and fancy eating clothes. Have a great time and come visit us in Vancouver or the Okanagan. You have my email.

Make it an annual event. Next year, we’d post. This year we’re “stuck” on the Central Coast of California. What a great idea!!
Truly enjoy your writing and you spirit of adventure. I read your blog knowing that I will get a laugh and a bon vivant’s take on food and eating in SMA.
I will miss your postings and look forward to your return next winter, Or better yet, continue to post as I am sure you have plenty to say and in doing so keep your readers informed and entertained.

Would have loved to go but your event is in conflict with the Pro Musica Garden Party at the same time. Wish yours was on the 29 March

Crap, why are we in Langley, BC.
There is just too much going on the weekend before all you snowbirds leave! Conflicts galore. My vote though I won’t be able to be there would by Gayle’s house in Balcones which has the name of Casa de Montitlan, I believe. To me, the best food, ambiance and service in San Miguel for a fixed price all inclusive meal. Only open for lunch on Sundays. If you’re not on the email list, try to get on it. Just the innovative things that are offered in each selection is fun to read.
Aw, does it have to be the 30th? We (and several of our SMA friends) will be at the Sunday afternoon concert at Casa Museo Gene Byron in Marfil, just outside of Guanajuato, earlier in the day and usually stay for a mid-afternoon lunch at one of our favorite restaurants-with-a-view there. Please do make this an annual event!
As for favorite San Miguel restaurants, my criteria would include consistently excellent food quality and variety (preferably authentic Mexican, since that is where we live!), great service, an ambience conducive to any kind of get-together from girls’ night out to family luncheon to romantic date night, a gorgeous view, covenient location, and affordable prices (not just for special occasions): all of which points to La Posadita, the rooftop restaurant on Cuna de Allende, the street alongside the Parrochia.
Have a lovely event!
Johnny and i look forward to being there. It will be a wonderful way to say goodbye to our new friends before you both leave!
My vote goes to La Mansion on Montitlan, Connie & Gail do a fabulous job, excellent food & atmosphere! Looking forward to meeting you on the 30th!
