Talk about the kid in the candy store. You should see Don Day in the wine store. Especially when the wine is discounted by 33-1/3%.
It was our first full day back in San Miguel de Allende after a couple of months in Toronto. And my first trip to the new La Comer or, as most people call it the old Mega. Time to stock up on the essentials which, of course, includes a box or three of wine.
I walked in the store and there were these big signs everywhere saying Temporada Naranja which to me means orange season but to Mexicans possibly means something slightly different. Then there were these other signs saying 3×2 en todos los vinos de mesa. I looked at Don Day’s Wife and said, “I think that says three for the price of two on all the wines in the house.” She said something back to me that she rarely says. She said, “I think you’re right.”
Now do you remember those contests where the prize was five minutes of supermarket shopping and everything you could pile in the buggy was free. I was moving at about twice the speed as I raced to the entrance to get my second shopping cart. This was perhaps the best deal on wine I’d ever seen in my life. This was my kind of Fourth of July.
I weaved my way down aisle number one to the regular racks at the back. Yes they still had the Chilean Reserva and Grand Reserva Cabs. Yes they still had the best selection of Spanish reds in town including about ten good Riojas.
Here were a few of my favorite buys:
Carnivor 2013 California Cabernet Sauvignon. From $234.22 to $152.08.
Campo Viejo 2010 Rioja Reserva. From $263.00 to $175.00.
Monte Xanic 2014 Chenin Colombard. From $223.00 to $149.00.
Citra Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. From $150.00 to $100.00.
Concha y Toro Marques de Casa Concha 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon. From $409.00 to $273.00.
Santa Rita Medalla Real Gran Reserva 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon.
And one very big favorite favorite for Don Day’s Wife. Her everyday Spanish Cava, in both blanco and rosado, Pata Negra. From $121.00 to $81.00.
But there was still a little room left at the top of one of the carts. What else would I be needing to accompany my new stock of bargain bottles. Ah yes, Ranitidina. And OMG, there was an even better sale. Some of the drugs were priced at 2 for 1.
One last recommendation. Walk don’t run. The sale ends July 7.
Fantastico! Por favor el locacion?
La Comer is located on the souteast corner where Salida a Celaya intersects with Libramiento Manuel Zavala.
Gracias! I felt like a fool when I realized that it was Mega/La Comer! Bought a great selection yesterday and enjoyed a very nice “Dragani 2014 Mont. D’ Abruzzo” last night. Salude!
It’s a yearly event, always to be eagerly anticipated.
Awesome,I love saving money on the essentials of life. Miss the place on a daily basis. Nice that your back already. Cheers
