That’s right, in history. Well in my history anyway. And I’ve had a lot of history.

It started with an email in Don Day’s Wife’s in-box: “Looks like Costco has a sale on wine and liquor. We’re getting low. Might be worth checking out.”

“I will honey”, I mumbled and, when True Detective was three quarters over and still wasn’t getting me any closer to finding out how the eight scientists ended up as popsicles, I picked up the iPad to check out the deal.

“Can’t find a whisper about it, zero on the website”, I told her and was quite ready to give up and head back to shivery Alaska and the icy character played by Jodie Foster.

“Try this in the search”, she said and gave me six letters to put in the box, then gave them to me again when I could only remember four of them.

Sure enough, up popped a bunch of wines, six pages of them actually. On the first page was one the more regular visitors to my little cubby hole under the stairs, Kirkland Signature Rioja Reserva. It looked like they were going to give me $150 off the $229 price if I bought six (my usual quantity). I put the order in, went to the CARRITO and hit the PAGAR button. Sure enough, I was getting them for $79 a bottle. Extraordinary! I hadn’t payed so little for a wine since the days of chugging Two Buck Chuck.

I scanned some other Mexican wine sites. I couldn’t find another Rioja Reserva for even twice the $79 price at Costco. And the Costco Rioja is a very good Rioja.

I went back in to the Costco site. Well OK, after Don Day’s Wife gave me the magic letters again, I went back in. On page four, I found Kirkland Signature Napa Valley and Kirkland Signature Alexander Valley, two more favorites, but wines that were only rarely purchased when I earned splurge status from Don Day’s Wife. But taking $150 off their numbers would take them down below $250 and into everyday status. I hit the 6 and the AGREGAR button for each and sure enough the discount worked again.

I kept going. The Tea Leaf, Viu Manent, Protos, Tattoo Girl, on and on I went on my buying spree, even adding three bottles of Champagne as the finder’s reward for Don Day’s Wife (and knowing that Valentine’s Day is next week).

I’m embarrassed to tell you how many bottles I bought but I’ll tell you I saved $8850 so you can probably work it out. I’ve been a serious wine drinker for over 50 years and I can’t remember ever getting a better deal.

Anyway, if you want to take advantage of the sale, hurry, there are only a couple of days left and I’m sure the low-end items are going to sell out fast. And I better share that magic code that Don Day’s Wife shared with me. It’s mcvych.
